What is Malawi Growth and Development Strategy III

The third Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS III) is being implemented from 2017 to 2022. It is the fourth medium-term national development strategy aligned to the country’s long-term development aspirations which were articulated in Vision 2020.

The previous development strategies that were developed to implement Vision 2020 were the Malawi Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (MPRSP), the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS) I and II.

The MGDS III was the final strategy that to take Malawi to the realization of Vision 2020. Unlike its immediate predecessor, MGDS III was built around a theme that aims to improve productivity, turn the country into a competitive nation and develop resilience to shocks and hazards. The MGDS III also consolidated the efforts that Malawi is undertaking to reposition herself as a global player.

Malawi Growth and Development Strategy III Key Priority Areas

The MGDS III emphasises the need to invest simultaneously in areas that can spur growth through the linkages they have with the other sectors of the economy. The strategy, therefore, identifies five key priority areas and these priority areas were attained using the macroeconomic modeling that was done using the integrated Sustainable Development Goals (iSDG) Model and the MalawiMod as well as a comprehensive review of literature and stakeholder consultations that were done across the country. The following are the areas:

1. Agriculture, Water Development and Climate Change Management
Agriculture sector can significantly support industrial development.

2. Education and Skills Development
The MGDS III focuses on improved access and equity to all levels of the education system, improved quality ECD services for children in Malawi. Read more...
