Lilongwe Council launches agri-input programme to enhance agricultural productivity

The Lilongwe District Council has launched a farm inputs distribution initiative under its resource mobilisation programme. The initiative, held at T/A Kalumbu Grounds in Lilongwe, was themed “Rekindling Self-reliance towards food Security and economic empowerment.” Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalumbu, who officially opened the event, described the initiative as a major milestone in promoting agricultural growth and a crucial step toward achieving Malawi’s 2063 vision.

Presiding over the event, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Dr. Roza Fatch Mbilizi, commended the council and its partners for championing a programme that promotes self-sufficiency and sustainable development. She emphasised that farming is central to achieving national prosperity and self-reliance. “If we want to be rich and self-reliant, we must depend on farming to fight poverty. Whatever we harvest should be maximised to ensure better yields. With government support, this initiative will expand to other districts as we work towards building a better Malawi and realising Vision 2063,” Dr Mbilizi said.

The initiative has mobilised K7.1 billion from farmers, with additional support from One Acre Fund and other stakeholders, for the purchase of farm inputs. The launch was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Seed-Co, One Acre Fund, Bayer Malawi, SFFRM, ADMARC, Global Seeds, Mgomera, Peacock Seeds, and Concern Worldwide.
