The Access To Information Act

Malawi has enshrined as a human right, in Section 37 of the republican constitution, the right of access to information held by public bodies, to be enjoyed by every person in the country.

The Access to Information Act was enacted in 2016 and put into effect in 2020 to regulate the provision of access to public information which empowers citizens to make informed choices and decisions about their lives and consequently their participation in national development and governance.

The Malawi 2063 national vision also recognizes access to information as crucial for achievement of inclusive wealth creation and self-reliance for the country.

The National Planning Commission (NPC), as a public body that thrives to be progressive and a model amongst its peers, is committed to the principle of transparency and accountability and guarantees access to information to the public through both proactive disclosure and timely attendance to request for information from members of the public and stakeholders.
