Youths are the drivers of national growth, say Minister

Newly appointed Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Honourable Patricia Wiskesi says the youth are the unutilised engine for Malawi’s growth and that the country needs to harness their numbers and energy to achieve national development aspirations as outlined in the Malawi 2063 national vision.

She was speaking at her office in Capital Hill, Lilongwe, today Wednesday November 19 2025, where she met a team from the National Planning Commission (NPC) led by its Board Chairperson Professor Richard Mkandawire. Wiskesi said she was determined to improve the effectiveness of her ministry so that Malawi starts to reap the benefits of her youthful population.

“The youth constitute over 70 percent of Malawi’s population, and if we can just make them, the country can develop tremendously,” she said.
She called for more collaboration between her ministry and NPC alongside all other stakeholders to put the youth in the driving seat of national development.

On his part, Mkandawire said the Malawi 2063 is youth-centric by design as it recognises the power of young people in its realisation.
He said young people need to be mobilised and prepared to venture into businesses that can move Malawi towards wealth creation and self-reliance as envisioned under Malawi 2063.

He said the youth can also be organised into a youth corps that can be in charge of community initiatives throughout the country, including in the reconstruction of infrastructure and restoration of the country’s ecosystems after disasters.
