NPC engages Parliament on MIP-1 budget alignment

The National Planning Commission (NPC) today Thursday, February 5, 2026 appeared before the Budget and Finance Committee of Parliament in Lilongwe where it presented to the committee the importance of aligning the national budget to the priorities in the Malawi 2063 First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1).

The meeting focused on strengthening the role of the NPC in the national budget vetting process, particularly in ensuring that public resources are directed towards strategic national development priorities outlined in the Malawi 2063.

Deputy Chairperson of the committee Hon. Emily Chithu said it was important for the committee to understand how improved national development can be achieved through alignment of the budget to the national vision.

“We cannot talk about national transformation without looking at the national vision,” she said
NPC Director General Fredrick Changaya emphasized the need for increased prioritisation as the country approaches 2030, the final phase of MIP-1 implementation.

He called on the committee to ensure that the policy guidance and technical recommendations provided by the Commission are effectively taken into account, ahead of the opening of the 2026/2027 national budget session scheduled for 13th February 2026.
