Food systems symposium to accelerate MW2063 realisation

The National Planning Commission (NPC) says the National Agrifood Systems Investment Symposium, which will take place on Monday, 5 October 2026, at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, is key to accelerated implementation of the Malawi 2063.

The symposium will be held under the theme “Unlocking Private Sector Investment for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation in Malawi,” recognising of the private sector in the transformation of Malawi’s agrifood systems and the economy.

It is being organised by the Malawi government through the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade, Business and Tourism, NPC and other partners with support from, the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GIZ).

Speaking during a media briefing in Lilongwe ahead of the symposium, NPC Director General Fredrick Changaya said transforming the agrifood sector requires collective efforts, with increased investment, innovation, and partnerships needed to unlock the sector’s potential.

“We need to work together in creating policies and sustainable solutions that will transform our economy,” said Changaya.

Principal Secretary for Trade in the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade, Business and Tourism, Wiskes Mkombezi, emphasised that government alone cannot transform Malawi’s agrifood systems without strong involvement from the private sector.

“We need the private sector to work hand in hand with government because they are key partners in opening doors for industrialisation and economic growth,” said Mkombezi.

GIZ Country Director Dr. Inge Baumgarten highlighted the importance of partnerships in supporting sustainable agrifood systems transformation in Malawi.
