FACTS ABOUT DEDZA

Dedza is a district in the Central Region of Malawi. It covers an area of 3,624 sq. km. and the population of the district is at 830,512.

Dedza lies to the south of the Malawi capital Lilongwe and is on the international boundary with Mozambique. It has the main border post for road transportation in and out of Malawi to the Indian Ocean ports of Beira and Maputo in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa for the central region districts of Malawi.

Dedza has an agro-based economy with tobacco farming as the main economic activity. Maize, beans, groundnuts and soya beans are also grown. Parts of the district are in a temperate weather zone which enables growing of horticultural crops like Irish potatoes, tomatoes, onions, peas and other vegetables are mainly supplied to the capital city Lilongwe.

Dedza has nine second level subdivisions of: 1. TA Tambala, 2. SC Chauma, 3. TA Kasumbu, 4. TA Kaphuka, 5. TA Kachindamoto, 6. SC Chilikumwendo, 7. SC KamenyaGwaza, 8. Dedza Boma and 9. TA Pemba
