The National Planning Commission (NPC), in collaboration with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), has commenced a two-and-a-half-day training workshop on food security simulations for officers from various government ministries and agencies, including the NPC.
The training aims to strengthen participants’ capacity to use the Food Security Simulator Tool. This Microsoft Excel–based model captures consumer behaviour and simulates the impacts of various policy options on food security outcomes.
Through this hands-on training, participants are being equipped with practical skills to analyse how changes in economic conditions, policy decisions, or food prices can affect household welfare and nutrition.
The workshop has brought together experts and key stakeholders from several government institutions and development organisations, including the Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, Ministry of Natural Resources, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), National Statistical Office, IFPRI, and the NPC team.
Speaking during the opening session, the Acting Director for Knowledge and Learning at NPC, Dr. Andrew Jamali, emphasised the importance of food security analysis in Malawi’s development planning process.
He highlighted that understanding the dynamics of food systems is essential in achieving sustainable development and ensuring that Malawi 2063 aspirations are achieved.
