NPC for child-centred planning, development

The National Planning Commission (NPC) says Malawi’s development planning and implementation must be child-centred as children are the future of the country.

Speaking on Friday, October 31 2025, during an engagement meeting with stakeholders on the Child Inclusive Development programme, NPC Director of Development Planning Dr. Grace Kumchulesi, emphasised the importance of integrating children’s needs and perspectives into national development processes, aligning with the inclusive vision of Malawi 2063 on human capital development as a key driver of inclusive wealth and self-reliance.

“It is very important to understand children from a perspective where they are protected and recognised as part of Malawi 2063, as they represent the future of our nation and our development goals,” said Kumchelesi.

The meeting was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture (MoLGuC) and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to discuss the Child-Inclusive Development Programme.

It was aimed at promoting high-level adoption of the Child-Inclusive Development Planning Guide by ministries and agencies leading efforts to address the socio-economic deprivation experienced by children in Malawi.

The guide will help MDAs design strategies that are grounded in evidence and responsive to the needs of children.

The meeting also underscored the importance of strong collaboration and synergy among stakeholders to ensure that child inclusion becomes a shared national responsibility in order to achieve inclusive wealth and self-reliance by 2063.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from various institutions, including the Ministry of Gender, the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Water, UN Women, UNFPA, GIZ, the National Children’s Commission, UNICEF and NPC.
