Blantyre is a district in the Southern Region of Malawi. The capital is Blantyre, a commercial city where most Malawian industrial and business offices are.
The district covers an area of 2,012 sq. km. and has a population of 809,397. Blantyre is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce, and its second largest city, with a population of 800,264 inhabitants. Blantyre is home to Malawi’s only medical school, the largest central hospital and Malawi’s largest hydro power stations of Nkula A and Nkula B. Blantyre is also home to Malawi’s oldest tobacco auction floors in Limbe. Blantyre rural is agrarian with main cash crop being tobacco, food crops grown are maize, beans, groundnuts, soya beans and pigeon peas.
