FACTS ABOUT KASUNGU

Kasungu is a district in the Central Region of Malawi. The district covers an area of 7,878 sq. km. and has a population of 842,953. The district has an international border with Zambia to the west and to the north a local border with Mzimba and Nkhotakota districts.

Kasungu is the home to Kamuzu Academy, an elite private grammar school at Mtunthama which was founded by the first president of Malawi, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda. It is also home to the Kasungu National Park on the western side bordering Zambia, popular for its elephant and lion populations. The main commercial agricultural activity of the district is tobacco farming. Food crops grown in Kasungu include maize, groundnuts, beans, soya beans and other pulses.

Kasungu has 16 second level subdivisions 1. SC Chisikwa, 2. TA Kaluluma, 3. SC M'nyanja, 4. TA Chulu, 5. SC Simlemba, 6. Kasungu National Park, 7. TA Kapelula, 8. TA Wimbe, 9. TA Mwase, 10. TA Kaomba, 11. Kasungu Boma, 12. SC Lukwa, 13. SC Chilowamatambe, 14. SC Njombwa, 15. SC Kawamba and 16. TA Santhe.
