Lilongwe is a district in the Central Region of Malawi. The district covers an area of 6,159 sq. km. and has a population of 1,346,360.
The larger population of Lilongwe district engage in agricultural activities with tobacco growing as the main economic activity. Maize, groundnuts, beans, soya and other pulses are the main food crops grown. The district is home to Lilongwe City, the capital city of Malawi.
Lilongwe city has a population of 1,122,000 and it is home to government - Capital Hill, the international community missions to Malawi, the main international airport, and Malawi’s main tobacco auction floors. Of recent Lilongwe economic profile has begun to eclipse the commercial city of Blantyre with the rapid industrialisation of the city. Lilongwe has Malawi's only five star hotel the President Walmont Hotel - Peermont Malawi and the largest conference centre in the country, the Bingu International Convention Centre.
