FACTS ABOUT MACHINGA

Machinga is a district in the Southern Region of Malawi. The district covers an area of 3,771 sq. km. and has a population of 369,614.

Machinga hosts a main rail line international border post on the east servicing the Vale mining interests in Moatize. Machinga’s main town is Liwonde which has Liwonge National Park on the banks Shire River. Liwonde is also a main train station for rail line going to Nacala in Mozambique. The town also lies on the Mangochi, Lilongwe – Zomba road. Agricultural base of the district are farming cotton and tobacco for cash crops, maize, rice, beans and other pulses are grown for food. Machinga shares custody of Lake Chilwa, an inland drainage lake, with the neighbouring Zomba district.

Machinga has 12 second level subdivisions of 1. TA Nyambi, 2. SC Ngokwe, 3. SC Chiwalo, 4. SC Chikweo, 5. Liwonda National Park, 6. TA Liwonde, 7. TA Kawinga, 8. Liwonde Town, 9. SC Mlomba, 10. SC Chamba, 11. SC Sitola and12. SC Mposa
