Malawi launches National Research Agenda

Malawi has today launched its National Research Agenda to support the realisation of its Malawi 2063 national vision through targeted research, technology and innovation.

Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa-Wirima launched the National Research Agenda at a ceremony that took place in Lilongwe.

The agenda has been developed through close collaboration between the National Planning Commission (NPC) and the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) with technical and financial support from government and UNICEF.

Speaking during the ceremony, Kambauwa-Wirima called for increased funding towards research as well as usage of results to facilitate economic and social development of the country.

"We have to find various ways of funding research as government resources alone cannot be adequate," said Kambauwa-Wirima.

On his part, NPC Director General Dr Thomas Munthali said the National Research Agenda provides a shopping ground for all actors in the research space to undertake focused and development responsive research that should spur innovation and technological development to help Malawi leap-frog into a knowledge-based economy.

On her part, NCST acting Director General Ms. Gift Kadzamira said the research agenda will help Malawi achieve her development through evidence based implementation.

On his part, UNICEF Deputy Resident Representative Gerrit Maritz said they were happy and proud to support the formulation of the National Research Agenda which was key to Malawi's development and the improvement of children's welfare in the country.
