FACTS ABOUT NKHOTAKOTA

Nkhotakota is a district in the Central Region of Malawi. The district covers an area of 4,259 sq. km. and has a population of 395,897. It is on the shore of Lake Malawi and is one of the main ports on Lake Malawi.

As of 2018, Nkhotakota Boma, the main town of the district has an estimated population of 28,350. The other major town in Nkhotakota, Dwangwa, is on the north of the district. It is the home of Dwangwa Sugar Estate the biggest formal 'private' employer in the districts, a sugar manufacturing company. A good percentage of the population earn their income from farming especially food crops of maize, rice (around Chia Lagoon) groundsnuts, beans and other pulses. Fishing in Lake Malawi is another major source of income.

Nkhotakota is home to the Chia Lagoon which feeds of Lake Malawi and is the largest lagoon off the lake. Nkhotakota Game Reserve on the west of the district is a key tourist attraction alongside several lakeshore resorts.

Nkhotakota has eight second level subdivisions of 1. SC Kafuzila, 2. TA Kanyenda, 3. SC Mphonde, 4. Nkhotakota Game Reserve, 5. Nkhotakota Boma, 6. TA Malenga Chanzi, 7. SC Mwansambo, 8. TA Mwadzama
