Malawi’s 2022 Voluntary National Review Report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

On July 15, 2022, Malawi presented its Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) meeting of the United Nations (UN) in New York, United States of America. The delegation was led by the Minister of Health, Hon. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, MP, who was supported by the Director General of the National Planning Commission, Dr Thomas Chataghalala Munthali.

In 2016, UN Member States unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which outlines 17 SDGs to guide global and national development action. Progress in the achievement of SDGs is monitored using a set of indicators at the global, regional and national level. At the national level, progress in the achievement of SDGs is monitored through National SDGs Reports (NSDGRs) and Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). VNR is part of the formal intergovernmental review process that is country-led and considers the realities at the national level.

Malawi’s 2022 VNR was launched on March 9, 2022 by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Hon. Sosten Alfred Gwengwe, MP. The VNR process was deliberately extensive and inclusive; and included public consultations and community engagements with representatives of diverse groups in all the districts of the country. This approach ensured that the findings of the VNR process provide a true reflection of how Malawians are participating in and benefitting from the implementation of the SDGs.

While the focus of the 2022 HLPF was limited to five SDGs (4,5,14,15 and 17), Malawi provided the progress made on all the 17 SDGs with the aim of:
o assessing the prospects of achieving most of the SDGs by 2030; this being one of the two key milestones of the Malawi 2063 First 10-year Implementation Plan (MIP-1); and
o reflecting on the key actions needed to achieve most of the SDGs by 2030, this being the last decade of action.
