United Kingdom’s University of York food systems Professor Andy Dougill says Malawi can create wealth through the improvement of its systems which can help the country boost its local and international trade.
He was speaking today in Lilongwe where he was an Eminent Speaker during the 12th Ndizotheka Eminent Speaker Series event organised by the National Planning Commission alongside it’s partners Mwapata Institute and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).
He said the food system offers enormous potential to the country if well organised through appropriate policy, crop diversification, adoption of irrigation and other technologies as well development of robust infrastructure such as transport.
“An improved food system can catalyse real transformation of the entire economy,” he said.
Officially opening the event, Minister of Trade & Industry Sosten Gwengwe said Malawi needs to focus on value addition of its agricultural products to not only boost exports but also enhance import substitution.
