Care Malawi’s Titukulane Project Impresses NPC

The National Planning Commission (NPC) says it is impressed with the impact Care Malawi’s Titukulane Project is registering among beneficiaries in Zomba and Mangochi districts.

The US$75 million project, which is being funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), started in 2019 and ends in 2025 and is aimed at achieving sustainable, equitable, and resilient food and nutrition security for ultra-poor and chronically vulnerable households in the two districts.

Speaking when a team from NPC visited some of the project beneficiaries in Traditional Authority Chowe’s area in Mangochi district, NPC Director of Development Planning Dr. Grace Kumchulesi said changes being experienced are clear among beneficiaries.

“We have seen and heard from the beneficiaries how some of them have become owners of livestock such as goats and how they have increased earnings and become food secure through their participations in irrigation schemes supported by the project,” said Kumchulesi.

She said the project was clearly inline with the Malawi 2063 national vision as it was helping families create wealth and become self-reliant economically.

Care Malawi’s Deputy Chief of the Party, Jones Chimpukuso, said key to the project is stimulating agricultural productivity through irrigation while also strengthening natural resource management.

It also covers other areas such as water sanitation and hygiene, food and nutrition, health and disaster risk management. – Story and photos by Mary Adams Phiri
