The National Planning Commission (NPC) last night, 11th March 2024, hosted members of Parliament from various committees of the National Assembly to an engagement cocktail where it presented to them its findings of an analysis it undertook on the 2024-2025 National Budget.
NPC Commissioner Mrs. Mercy Masoo said NPC conducted the analysis to assess the extent to which it has been aligned to the Malawi 2063 First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1) in full recognition that the national budget is a critical tool for operationalizing the country’s medium- and long-term development plans.
Presenting the findings, NPC Director General Dr. Thomas Munthali noted that while the 2024-2025 budget was an improvement from previous budgets in terms of allocation of funding for development, it was still falling short in terms of supporting the productive sectors of the economy to make that the country achieves the economic growth needed to support national development, wealth creation and self-reliance.
First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon. Madalitso Kazombo has since advised NPC to undertake and present the findings to MPs before they break into cluster meetings while also making sure that they take an active role in the formulation of the budget alongside the Ministry of Finance.
