MW2063 Youth Strategy Launched

Minister of Youth Honourable Uchizi Mkandawire, MP, has today launched the Malawi 2063 Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) which is aimed at facilitating the active participation of the youth in the transformation of the country towards an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation by the year 2063.

The YES was launched alongside the 2024-2030 Strategic Plan of the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) during the 2024 National Youth Summit.

Mkandawire said young people are key in the realization of the Malawi 2063, hence the importance of the YES in defining how they will take a lead in its realization. “Malawi 2063 will only be realized with full involvement of the youth in its implementation,” he said.

National Planning Commission (NPC) Director General Dr. Thomas Munthali said the YES will establish the commitment that the government and other stakeholders are putting forward to ensure that youth engagement is not only rhetoric but getting institutionalized in all programmes by state and non-state actors across all sectors of the economy.

He said the YES will complement implementation of the NYCOM Strategic Plan which is key in enabling the council to deliver on its critical mandate of empowering the young people of this nation.

Making a presentation on the YES, NPC Senior Development Planning Specialist Ivy Chauya said the strategy details strategic policy direction and actions needed to strengthen and promote active youth involvement in the realisation of the MW2063.

She said youth representatives from across the country were engaged to deliberate on approaches to involve youth in the implementation of MW2063. “The engagement ensured participation of various youth groups, including those with disabilities, and living in rural areas,” she said.

NYCOM Executive Director Rex Chapota said launching of the YES and the NYCOM strategic plan will ensure that youth engagement goes beyond rhetoric.
“This is a reminder that our voices are not just contributions but essential components for impactful solutions,” he said.
