Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Hon. Jappie Mhango has described the National Planning Commission (NPC) as ‘extremely important for Malawi’ as it is responsible for order and guidance that the country needs to recover economically and transform into a wealthy nation in the medium and long term.
He was speaking on Wednesday, November 26 2025, in his office in Lilongwe when he hosted a team from NPC led by one of its commissioners Dr. Betty Chinyamunyamu, who paid a courtesy call on him. Mhango, who is also the leader of government business in Parliament, said the new government will ensure that NPC is properly supported for its effectiveness in the development of the country.
“The good thing is that our Democratic Progressive Party] is already aligned to the Malawi 2063, so Malawians can be assured of our commitment to achieve their aspirations as outlined in the national vision,” he said.
On her part, Chinyamunyamu pledged NPC’s support in the implementation of the ruling party’s manifesto, particularly in land management and urban development, which are key in the realisation of MW2063.
“Land is important for investment; that’s why your ministry must work closely with the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre to ensure that investors don’t face hurdles when looking for land for their investments,” she said.
Chinyamunyamu, in the company of NPC Director General Fredrick Changaya and other NPC officials, also called for the strengthening and enforcement of regulations that promote the construction of high-rise buildings in certain areas of Malawi’s cities for better utilisation of the country’s limited land resources. She also bemoaned slow progress in the implementation of the Malawi Secondary Cities Plan and called on the minister to revive its realisation.
