PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
NPC Director General to Depart for New Role
Lilongwe, Malawi, Tuesday, February 4, 2025 — The National Planning Commission (NPC) announces that its Director General, Dr. Thomas Chataghalala Munthali, will be stepping down from his position effective March 31, 2025 to take up a new role at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London – the United Kingdom, where he will contribute to the advancement of international development and cooperation across the Commonwealth nations, including Malawi.
As the first Director General of the NPC, Dr. Munthali not only stewarded the process of setting the secretariat and operations when he joined in 2019, but also built its image and brand promoting the new national narrative of wealth creation and self-reliance.
During his tenure, Dr. Munthali ensured that the NPC remained independent, professional and apolitical. He played a pivotal role in conceptualizing, driving and championing Malawi’s long-term development agenda, the Malawi 2063 (MW2063), and the MW2063 First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1); and fostering strategic partnerships across state and non-state actors.
The NPC expresses its most sincere gratitude to Dr. Munthali for his dedicated service and visionary leadership, congratulates him on his new role and wishes him every success in this important global assignment.
In keeping with the dictates of the law, the NPC will immediately commence the process of recruiting a successor to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of it’s vital work.
